As athletes gear up for the Pan Am and Parapan Am games this summer, here at HGH Granite we’re hard at work on a memorial for renowned Aboriginal-Canadian runner Tom Longboat. Longboat rose to prominence at the turn of the 20th century, winning the Boston Marathon in 1907 and competing at the Olympics the following year. While serving in the First Word War (and being wounded twice), Longboat competed in a number of overseas events, and ultimately earned a place in Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.
The memorial, designed by artist David General, will be on display at the Pan Am games in Toronto this summer. After some initial challenges, we were able to procure the large pieces of Coffee Brown granite from our supplier, who worked with the quarry in India.
The next step is to perform sandblasting and laser etching at our facility, before sending the memorial off to Toronto for installation. If you’re curious about the installation, or if you’d like to commission your own project, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We provide granite installation and supplier services throughout Ontario and beyond.
