The Holy Redeemer sculpture was inspired by the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, designed by French sculptor Paul Landowski.
Our client, Catholic Cemeteries of the Diocese of Hamilton – with whom we have enjoyed an ongoing working relationship for many years – wanted to create its own version of this famous statue for the grounds of the Holy Cross Cemetery in Paris, Ontario.
The artists worked from photos of the Rio sculpture to recreate it as a clay prototype, according to the client’s specifications. Once the prototype had received final approval, work on the sculpture began.
We covered the whole scope of this job, from sourcing Imperial Grey granite, to engraving the text on the pedestal, both with robotic milling equipment and by hand. We polished the final piece, engraved it, and designed and made the plinth on which it stands.
Finally, our team installed it. Initially the statue was envisioned as a singular structure. However, due to its towering dimensions – 10 feet wide and 14 feet tall – we decided to divide it into two pieces: the bottom half and plinth; and the top half from just beneath the shoulders upwards. This allowed for a practical shipping and installation process, while preserving the sculpture’s grandeur.
The final piece was unveiled to the public in November 2023 – and stands as a symbol of grace, strength and serenity.
