Maanjidowin: The Gathering is a 16-foot granite and bronze sculpture created by celebrated Indigenous artist David M. General. Commissioned by PortsToronto, the piece recognises the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and their relationship to the land, air and water.
Three mythical fishers – Mukwa-kwe (Bear), Nigig-kwe (Otter) and Migizi-kwe (Eagle) – are shown arriving at the estuaries and islands along Toronto’s Lake Ontario shoreline to fish. Their canoe is inscribed with words and symbols of significance to the Mississaugas of the Credit, including the Medicine Wheel and the Seven Grandfather Teachings.
HGH Granite had previously worked with David M. General on the Thomas Longboat Memorial for the Pan Am Games and on Eagles Among Us at Battlefield Park. For this project, we sourced and supplied the polished granite pieces for the canoe and animals and engraved the artwork, placing stencils exactly where the artist envisioned before sandblasting.
The project was installed in partnership with the Mississaugas of the Credit throughout April 2022 and opened to the public on 4 May 2022. Today it stands as a national treasure on Toronto’s waterfront, delivering a beloved landmark that encourages visitors and locals to reflect on Indigenous culture and history.
At HGH Granite, we’re proud to have helped bring David M. General’s vision to life and to continue our tradition of crafting meaningful public monuments.
