Project Highlight
The Indigenous Medicine Wheel
At the centre of the park sits a custom granite Medicine Wheel created using four naturally coloured granites:
• Indian Red
• Jet Black
• Siva Gold
• Viscount White
Using the stone’s natural colours rather than coloured concrete material or painted finishes means this granite landmark will retain its natural appearance for many years to come.
Project Overview
Created to honour respected Whitefish River First Nation Elder, nurse and educator Dr. Lillian McGregor, this public park celebrates Indigenous culture, history and community in the heart of downtown Toronto.
We were proud to work alongside DTAH and Orin Contractors, to supply the custom granite paving and natural granite boulders that help define this tribute.
Every stone was carefully selected to support the vision and colour preferences of the designers and to create a welcoming space for learning and reflection that stood the test of time.
At the heart of the park is an Indigenous Medicine Wheel, inlaid into the paving where the main pathways meet.
To reflect the landscape architects’ vision, we selected four granites – Indian Red, Jet Black, Siva Gold and Viscount White.
Each choice represented one of the four colours of the Medicine Wheel. Because the colours are naturally occurring within the stone, the feature will retain its appearance for generations to come.
Beyond the paving, HGH sourced and supplied the natural granite boulders used throughout the park. Each boulder was individually selected for its size, shape, colour and character to complement the surrounding landscape. The finished result echoes the natural granite outcrops of Northern Ontario while creating places for visitors to sit, gather and explore.
Developed in close collaboration with Dr. McGregor’s family and Indigenous Elders, the park demonstrates how thoughtful landscape architecture and carefully selected granite can come together to celebrate culture, tell meaningful stories and create lasting public spaces.
We’re honoured to have contributed to a project that celebrates the remarkable legacy of Dr. Lillian McGregor.
