At the heart of Eagles Among Us are four nine-foot-high granite eagles, arranged within a circular plaza.
Each eagle is engraved with symbols and text relating to the themes of healing and reconciliation, while the four granite colours were selected to represent the colours of the Ojibwa Medicine Wheel.
Together, the scale, natural colour and permanence of the stone help bring artist David M. General’s vision to life.
Installed at Battlefield Park in Stoney Creek in 2014, Eagles Among Us is a major public artwork by renowned Indigenous artist David M. General, a member of Six Nations of the Grand River.
Commissioned as part of the City of Hamilton’s War of 1812 Bicentennial commemorations, the monument draws on interpretations of Haudenosaunee and Anishinabek cultural traditions to explore healing and reconciliation.
HGH worked closely with David to help translate his vision into granite, supplying the stone for four monumental eagle figures, each standing nine feet high.
Colour was an important part of the design. Four different granites were selected to represent the colours of the Ojibwa Medicine Wheel, allowing the meaning behind the artwork to be expressed through the natural stone itself.
The eagles were also engraved with detailed symbols and text, adding another layer of storytelling to each of the four pieces.
For HGH, this was a project that really demonstrated what can be achieved with granite. As David himself reflected, our team was able to take a traditional, durable natural material and use it in a way that supported his Indigenous perspective and connection between art and the land.
More than a decade after its installation, Eagles Among Us remains an important part of the landscape at Battlefield Park and a powerful example of how public art, cultural storytelling and granite can work together.
