This experiential public artwork and installation, in the heart of the Niagara-on-the-Lake old town – celebrates and honours the contributions of Black Canadians to the area, weaving together West African and Underground Railroad symbolism with inspiring quotes, and nods to significant aspects of Black history.
In creating this piece, the designers wanted to take the people who visit, and interact with it, on a journey of awareness and appreciation for the lives and experiences of Black men, women and children, who experienced slavery and ultimately freedom.
“What I learned from many years in the design business was that suppliers and contractors are an integral part of all successful projects. HGH Granite is a company dedicated to the art and business of granite. For the Voices of Freedom project, HGH Granite was an integral part of the project’s success. Their understanding of the artistic thesis, their technical expertise and attention to detail provided an essential component in this magnificent project.” Tom Ridout, Fleisher Ridout Partnership
As visitors move through the space on the main granite pathway – sourced and supplied by HGH – they interact visually and physically with its arresting steel figures and forms. A manicured garden surrounds the artwork, making it the perfect place to reflect and meditate.
But this piece is not just about looking back and listening to the Black voices of Canada’s past – but looking forward and listening to today’s and tomorrow’s Black voices to ensure our nation’s bright and fair future. We’re very proud to have played a role in this important monument.
