This integrated piece of public art – created in 2008 by artist and competition winner Stephen Cruise – is located at the Cambridge Civic Administration Building in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada.
The vision of the artist was to create a public artwork that honoured the regions and founding communities that now make up the amalgamated city of Cambridge: Galt – previously known as The Granite City – Preston, Hespeler and Blair.
The work is a testament to the enduring sense of citizenship, neighbourhood and place in the square. And while the sculptural components and water feature evoke historic town features, creatures from the natural world, and reflect the continued presence of the Grand River and its watershed, they also act as contemporary symbols of our natural world and our need to protect it.
HGH were tasked with sourcing polished granite for the art elements of this project – and we’re proud to have played a role in the creation of such an important landmark that celebrates and brings communities – new and old – together.
